Modernizing this small kitchen
required updating it and adding
storage, while keeping in mind the
architect’s original signature style and
materials. Ceiling-high cabinets add
storage and create a display area
above the window for the homeown-
er’s glass art. Negative space around
the range hood offers visual balance of
the wall-to-wall cabinets. The stacked
course tile backsplash evokes the
adobe construction of the home.
Hand-forged decorative hardware
complements antique iron latches
throughout the home.

Organization and storage were
paramount in this kitchen project, so
specialty drawers and customized
cabinetry were used tomaximize stor-
age. The small footprint of this mid-
century kitchen required going vertical.
The cabinetry is two-tone, so that the
extra-tall vertical cabinets would not
overpower the space. The tiled walls
allow for a visual flowwith no breaks
and easy maintenance. The kitchen
now features many pullouts, includ-
ing a dishwasher drawer for everyday
cutlery.
